Michael J. VanEss

November 29, 1954 — October 12, 2025

Sturgeon Bay

Michael J. VanEss, of Sturgeon Bay, passed from this life on October 12, 2025 at the Jack & Engrid Meng Hospice Residence after a short illness.

Michael was born November 29, 1954 in Two Rivers to Henry and Dolores (Schultz) VanEss. He graduated from Washington High School with the class of 1973. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from UW-Green Bay and a Masters in Human Development from Bowling Green State University. Mike began his Social Work career in Green Bay and then moved to the Door County Social Services Department in 1992. He currently worked part-time at the Sturgeon Bay YMCA.

Mike’s passion was gardening. What began helping our mom in her flower garden ended as an Honors Master Gardener. Mike became a Certified Master Gardener while in Green Bay. Shortly after moving to Sturgeon Bay, he was instrumental in gathering a group of gardeners in Door County to take the training and then to form the Door County Master Gardeners Association. He was the first DCMGA president and held several other positions over the years including being the Chairman of the local committee that ran the Wisconsin Master Gardeners Assoc. state-wide conference in Door County. What started with 11 gardeners has grown to over 130 certified, alumni and volunteer gardeners in the DCMGA. Mike has left his mark.

Mike is survived by sister Debbie & Al Augustine, Mishicot; and brother Keith & Pamela VanEss, Peshtigo. He is also survived by nephews and niece, Matt Augustine, Brett Augustine, Jacob (Sami) Szynskie, and Samantha Szynskie.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry & Dolores VanEss; and a brother & sister-in-law Pete & Cece VanEss.

A private family service will be held. Online condolence messages may be shared at DejaMartin.com.

Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels of Two Rivers assisted the family with funeral arrangements.

Mike’s family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff of the Meng Hospice Residence. Their compassionate and dignified treatment of Mike and his family was a blessing during this difficult time. They are truly angels.
